Katakana contracted sounds use an イ-row Katakana plus a small ャ, ュ, or ョ. The small Katakana changes the sound into one syllable.
Small Katakana matters
Be careful with size
ヤ, ユ, ヨ are normal size, but ャ, ュ, ョ are small. The smaller ャ・ュ・ョ combines with the previous Katakana. It is not read as a separate full sound.
